Stride of Pride.
"Are you thinking or doing kegels?""Yes"
Last week I wasn't too thrilled with the 30 Rock dose I received. It was missing those witty, rewarding, well thought-out, "inside baseball” type jokes that have been the direct cause of the show's low ratings since day 1. When I saw in the opening credits that Ms. Fey penned last night's episode though, my worries of another repeat in mediocrity quickly melted away like a popsicle in the cross hairs of a Rosie O'Donnell fart.
A good way to gauge if an episode of 30 Rock is good is if you watch it with your parents and they look mad and confused…
I didn't watch last night's 30 Rock adventure with the folks, but if I did, my mom would have probably looked like a child forced to watch CBS Sunday Morning while eating black licorice, and my dad would have had the face of a dog looking in the mirror…
It was a good episode.
Are women funny? Ah, an age old question that has been pondered by bitter male comedians whose careers still haven't gotten them any substantial vagina action…
This week Liz has to defend her gender's chuckle inducing ability when Tracy tweets otherwise. This storyline was a little nugget of art imitating life, as more and more funny women are getting lead roles on sitcoms that actually matter, and more and more dinguses like Chris Hitchens, from Vanity Fair, and Adam Carolla, from Eyebrow Wars on IFC, are declaring that humans with ovaries can't make people laugh… Oh and you can't forget Chevy Chase, who has officially declared that no one is funny except for him. I gotta say, he makes a strong argument as the voice of Cho Cho in The Karate Dog.
While waging war against Tracy's sexist belly, Liz is also desperately attempting to organize a Sex and the City-style brunch so she can say witty intercourse puns like,
"And I thought I was eating eggs”
My only confusion regarding Liz's SATC impulses is that she finally has a normal sex life… don't ladies usually cling to the absurd Carrie Bradshaw dreams when they are unable to get intimate with anything other than a cucumber they sexily named Belvedere Cruz?
Either way, it was funny.
When Jack runs into Zerena, one of the girls he's "great escaping,” he realizes she's doing the exact same thing. Why ever would she need other men when she has old Jacky Bear? Of course, Jack's insecurities seep out of his handsome box head and he goes on a mission to collect all the men Zerena has been great escaping, or "pokemoning” as the younger ones are wont to describe it. When Jack realizes that he's being stuffed into the pokeball designated for the older father figure type it finally dawns on him… he's old.
Embrace it he should, and embrace it he does! Jack realizes he doesn't need to be the guy who's expected to have sex after a rock climbing expedition, especially when he gets to be the one who's allowed to be racist while sipping soup!
In order to avoid that odd period in an actress's career where she can only play the middle-aged wife, Jenna decides to tell a tabloid that she's 56. Brilliant. Now she can completely skip that 10 year period where she would probably play a secondary character in a CBS sitcom, and go straight to being Helen Mirren. So brilliant.
Not only did Jenna think of a quality aging game plan this week, she was also the reason Jack accepted his fate as the fatherly fuck buddy.
Oh, and she came away with my favorite line of the night,
"Are you alright Jack? You look like that flash card they told me means sadness."
"Stride of Pride" -
This week felt like old 30 Rock while still feeling like new 30 Rock. If they stay on this track I will be even sadder then I initially expected come curtain call. I'm going to cry like 26 year old who just lost his favorite sitcom. Anti-analogy! Better make sure you mind doesn't spin out of it's casing!
- Zerena's hipster Pokemon's email address is Hip420@brooklyn.beard
- "I know Geri-Chair, they're the company that makes my bed steps” – Liz
- Everyone's favorite mentally-challenged amphibian, Ryan Lochte, guest starred as himself. His comedic timing was actually pretty great. If each scene he was in didn't require at least 15 takes I will be genuinely flabbergasted.
